USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Performance set to Double

I just read a Press Release on usb.org that The USB 3.0 Promoter Group are working on development of a USB SuperSpeed (USB 3.0) enhancement that will add a much higher data rate. They are taking about up to twice the data through-put performance of existing USB !!!  The news was released at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. This supplement to the existing USB 3.0 specification is expected to be completed by the middle of this year (2013)

USB 3.0 SuperSpeed set to double up the Speed

Key characteristics of the higher-rate SuperSpeed USB solution:USB 3.0 SuperSpeed

  • New 10 Gbps USB data rate.
  • Compatibility with existing cables and connectors.
  • Improved data encoding for more efficient data transfer leading to higher throughput and improved I/O power efficiency.
  • Compatible with existing USB 3.0 software stacks and device class protocols.
  • Compatible with both existing 5 Gbps and new 10 Gbps USB 3.0 hubs and devices, as well as USB 2.0 products.

This upgrade will push the speed of USB to compete with the Thunderbolt™ Technology most known from the Apple MacBook Pro.

About the USB 3.0 Promoter Group

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group, comprised of Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Renesas Electronics, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments, developed the USB 3.0
Specification that was released in November 2008. In addition to maintaining and enhancing this specification, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group develops specification addendums to extend or adapt its specifications to support more platform types or use cases where adopting USB 3.0 technology will be beneficial in delivering a more ubiquitous, richer user experience.

I don’t know about you guys, but I really love the upgrade from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0. The fact that they are already ready to upgrade the specification to double the speed. I just think it would be a lot easier if the called it USB 4.0 or maybe USB 3.5 to make it easier for everyone. What do you think? Please leave me a comment below.

i dont care if it called usb 2.0 or 3.0 or what. what i want is the increase of speed of data transfer

    1. Hi Juan
The speed is ofcause the most important, but would be nice to know if you got 3.0 5 Gbps or 3.0 10 Gbps I would say.

  2. Hi Thomas, This is very exciting news. I can see that this will be a big improvement over current speeds. What uses do you see being made of these increased speeds? I bet we can’t even yet imagine how companies will take advantage of these advancements!

    1. Hi Carolyn
It will be great when taking USB backup e.g. If I can backup my computer in half the time with this improvement it will be just awesome 🙂

  3. Vikram

Hey it’s a great news. Although USB 3.0 is good but everyone wants more speed. Thank you for spreading this amazing news.

    1. More wants more right 🙂

  4. This is great news. I can’t wait to try on this one.

  5. This increase in speed sounds great. They should definitely change the name, it would be great for marketing the product.

  6. These data transfer are getting insane. Too bad the file sizes are ever increasing, particularly in photography

    1. Hi Stephen
Bigger files does for sure make us need faster transfer rates.

I have to agree with Stephen, while new faster transfer speeds are always great, it would be great to see some higher-capacity drives get a lower price. It’s strange that as capacity on hard drives gets bigger and cheaper every year, high-capacity flash drives seem to stay expensive.

I am using USB3.0 now and believe me it offers more than double speed of USB 2.0.

  9. And let me guess, we will need to replace our motherboards to experience new 10Gbps USB 3.0? Only the cables and connectors are compatible right?

    1. Hi Shalin
Since I wrote this post things have changed a bit. It looks like the new standard are named USB 3.1 You can read more here: http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/01/usb-alliance-finalizes-10gbps-specification-as-usb-3-1/
