How to burn ISO files out of the box in Windows 7 with Isoburn

Have you ever installed a CD/DVD burner application just to be able to burn an ISO file? I know that I have, many times actually. Well with Windows 7 Microsoft put an end to that. I am not saying that you should never buy a CD/DVD burning program again. If you need it then go ahead, but if you only need it to be able to burn an ISO file you don’t need to buy a program for that.

How to use Isoburn

In Windows 7 it comes out of the box. The name of the program is ISOBurn.exe, and it is very simple and not fancy at all, but it get the job done.

If you start the program just clicking on the isoburn.exe file you will see this dialog:
Isoburn

That is because the program needs the ISO file as an argument in order to start. If you are not into all that argument stuff I have an easy tip for you:

  • Locate the ISO file you want to burn
  • Right click on it and select “open with” and choose “Windows Disc Image burner”

Isoburn

Give it a try next time you need to burn an ISO file. It is as easy as it gets and it is out of the box in Windows 7. If you want to be sure that the disk is working you can check the Verify box to make it perform a validation check afterwards. It does make the process take a bit longer, but it might be worth the extra time.

Isoburn in Windows 10?

In case you have upgraded to Windows 10, you can still use Isoburn. In fact I think it is the exact same program in Windows 10. Still very simple to use.

Hope you like it and please write a comment if you have any questions or if you have anything else on your mind.

    Hi Thomas,

I guess it’s about time Microsoft includes an app that works out the gate. Since the days of WinXP, I’ve used CDBurnerXP (and recommended it to other Windows users). In your opinion, does the Windows Disc Image burner do a good job?

  2. Hi Vernessa
I agree with you. It was about time with a build in function for ISO burning.
Thank you for visiting my blog. Hope to see you back on my blog soon.

I think this is definition of too little too late 😉 CDburnerXP, ImgBurn and lots more own this area. I guess “new” feature is, or was, part of Microsofts attempt to go rock’n’roll with 7 compared to Vista.

    1. Hi Webnik.
Thank you for commenting on my blog. I agree that we for sure have been waiting for this for a long time. Better late than never I guess. For sure CDBurnerXP and ImgBurn is better programs, but I still like when simple stuff like burning an ISO is out of the box.

    Hi Thomas,
This is stunning news! An app that comes with windows. To be frank, you really can’t blame them for not including a thing with the O.S. With all of the legal troubles with Justice your lucky to get a clock with Windows.

    1. Hi Jeffrey
      Welcome to my blog.
Sure it is a tough balance for Microsoft what they should include in the OS and what they should leave for other company to develop. Of cause the legal issues is also something the need to consider. I don’t hope they are considering removing the clock in future releases 🙂

    Hi Thomas,
I never knew about this hidden feature in Windows 7. It really makes things easier and cuts the cost of buying a new software just for burning ISO’s. Although there are many free applications too to do the same thing, but an inbuilt software always saves (disk) space and money

    Hi,
I wonder i can burn the file other than ISO format using this Windows 7 feature? And thanks for the useful information here. Before this, i am using Nero to burn my file to a CD/DVD.

    1. Hi Rickey
Isoburn can only burn iso files, but if you are looking for a free tool instead of Nero you can take a look at ImgBurn. I have another post about that program too: https://techthatworks.net/tools/review-of-imgburn

This post is also from 2011 🙂
The good thing about Isoburn is that it is built in to Windows and you don’t need to install anything, but of cause there is many better programs out there for image burning.
