I think we all have been there. You have hundreds or maybe thousands of pictures taken with a digital camera on your hard drive and decide to start organize them with better describing filenames than the default names that the camera have given the pictures. It is not a very fun task and it seems like a never ending story. Have you been there? Did you renamed all the files manually or did you quit the task?
With Bulk Rename Utility renaming files are fast and easy
Bulk Rename Utility is a small free application that can help you to rename multiple files fast and simple. You select the files you want to rename and enter what characters you want to replace/remove/add to the files. You can also auto add dates and numbers to the files to make sure that all file names are unique (You can’t have 2 files with identical filenames in the same folder in Windows). You can see both the original name and New Name of the files as you change the prefix, suffix and numbering schema for the rename process. When it all is the way you want it you hit the rename button and the files are getting renamed. When I first started the program and saw the user interface it seemed a bit complex and difficult to use, but as I started to change the different options it actually was pretty simple. I think that you should check it out yourself and let me know what you think about it.
System Requirements of Bulk Rename Utility:
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows Server 2003
- Windows 2000/NT, 98, Me
Download Bulk Rename Utility (Available in both 32 & 64 bit editions)

That seems a great tool to rename files. I used to do this sometimes manually but becomes quite hectic when you have to rename above 30 files. After that I always used to quit. These application sounds great .Will try it for sure. Thanks

I am sure that you will find it very useful even if you only have to rename like 30 files.

Hi Thomas, You’re right, this would come in especially handy with pictures. My iPhone give pictures very strange names and doesn’t allow us to rename them. I have avoided the process so far, but this is a great way to deal with the situation. Thanks for sharing this great utility!

what an interesting tool, to be able to have something to rename all files at once sounds like heaven.
Like this post a lot. There could be many other ways to achieve it but you have very genuinely highlighted the best. According to me you described that in very good way.
Now this is something that would be useful for me, as I’m taking a lot of photographs lately, something like this would be ideal to rename those mass of photos on my hard drive, rather then the default names from the camera.
Thanks Thomas

Hi Tomas,
Great! Doesn’t sound like a tool worth using – until you have to change a couple of hundred file’s according to a simple change in company policy regarding naming convention. Thanks so much for sharing.

Excellent tool for renaming multiple files.i liked it.
Thank you Steve.
ok for me this little application is good as it quickly renames the files and everything but i want to know that how we can find the same files i mean does this application keep any feature of finding the folders you renamed via it.
Hi Akram

I don’t use the program for renaming folders, but only files within the same folder. My digital camera names the pictures I take like img001.jpg, img002.jpg and so on. If I take like 100 pictures and want them all to be named like “Summer2012_001.jpg”, “Summer2012_002.jpg” instead this program can help me to do that very quickly without the need of manually renaming each file. That is where this program really are great.

Wow this looks like a great piece of software. I like how it’ll make it so names are not duplicate. My Samsung Galaxy S2 auto imports to Dropbox upon connection to save photos. I know which tool I’ll be using to rename these quickly. Thanks Thomas!

Renaming files can be very tedious on our part since we need to go over to it one by one. There are times that we can’t even rename it as accurate as possible. Another great tool that I can make used of right now. Thank you for sharing this to us!
