Why don’t you mention yourself on Twitter?

I see it all the time. I visit a blog, find something interesting that I want to share with my followers. I click on the Twitter or Buffer button and then I see it or actually I don’t see it..! The owner of the blog have installed Sharebar, Buffer or other share buttons, has a lot of followers, a lot of reTweets but no Twitter handle in the tweet, that I am about to post. Why is that? I see it a lot and not just on newbie bloggers that has just started blogging. I also see it on successful blogs with a lot of traffic. It really is amazing, how many that have not configured this little setting. Now it is time for me to write a post to address this matter.

Tweet with Twitter name

Why you should add your Twitter name to you share buttons

First of all it gives you a change to see who is retweeting your stuff under Mention in Twitter and give you a great way to connect with these people. It also give people who see the tweet a fast way to find your Twitter profile and connect with you and maybe they will start following you on Twitter. I guess you can see it as free advertising and all you have to do is to configure it once! If you are a very active on Social network you are properly using hours each week to promote yourself. If you don’t have your twitter name added when people tweets your stuff on your blog you should get it fixed right away. I will show you how it is done in Sharebar below.

How to add your Twitter name to the Sharebar plugin

  • Go to your Dashboard -> Settings -> Sharebar
  • Click on Settings:

Sharebar settings

  • Find Twitter username textbox and enter your own twitter name (without @)

Sharebar twittername setting

  • Click on “Update settings” and test that the Twitter button and/or Buffer button are adding your twitter name after you have made this change.

That’s all. Pretty simple if you ask me, so if you have not made the configuration yet, now you know how to do it. Now it is your turn. Are you also seeing a lot of bloggers that are missing this setting? Do you agree with me that it is a must do settings or do you think that it is a bad idea to add your twitter name when people are sharing your posts? Please drop me a comment and test my tweet button to see if I have configured my plugin correct 😉

  1. Glad you wrote a post on this Thomas, I’ve done so many I sound like a broken record.

I also let people know that although I may find your content really great, I refuse to share it on Twitter if you don’t have your Twitter ID included.

I want you to know I shared your content and I’m not going to go to the trouble to locate that. It’s too time consuming for me.

Hope your readers will make it easy for everyone. Your simple instructions really do help.

    1. Hi Adrienne
I just had to get it out now. I can’t believe that so many bloggers are missing out on this one. I think that you have a very good point about letting the blogger know that we share he/she’s content. That is just another good reason to fix this little setting.

    2. Atish

I too agree with this. I love to tweet an article which includes the author’s or site admin’s name there. Thanks for writing such a nice post.

  2. It is very important to know who retweets you in the Mention section. I just did what is presented here in Twitter!

    1. It is for sure Rashmi. That is why I am surprised that some many miss this setting.

  3. Hi Thomas, I so agree. I can’t believe how many blogs I visit where the person hasn’t included this information. I won’t tweet out a post if I have to hunt to find out their Twitter ID. I like to include the Twitter ID for my followers so they know the source of the content I’m tweeting.

I’m so glad Adrienne found this post. This is one of her main pet peeves and I thought of her immediately when I read it.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Thomas!

    1. Hi Carolyn
It is amazing how many bloggers that are missing this little setting. I think adding the Twitter name benefits both the blog owner and us that blog their posts. I really can’t come up with any idea what not to do it. I hope this post can make just a couple of guys out there add their Twitter name.

  4. I too have found this issue on many blogs, I think many bloggers are not aware how to do it that’s why they’re missing such an easy way of promotion and brand building.

    1. I think you are right about that. I hope that some of them will read this post and get it fixed. It is so easy to do.

  5. Karen

I’ve seen this so many times, as soon as I click that “tweet” button and no user name comes up, then I just don’t bother, if they can’t be bothered helping themselves, then why should I have to hunt down their Twitter name for them.

Shame really as they are missing out on so much by not including their Twitter name 😉

    1. Hi Karen
I am glad to hear that I am not the only one seeing this over and over again. I am not going to hunt down their Twitter name either. Sometimes I don’t even bother to send the tweet.

      1. I don’t send the tweet either, I really can’t see the point 😉 😉

  6. Hi,
I have visited so many sites and when I want to share or include their awesome post to my own retweet sharing site, I couldn’t find their twitter name and this made me to leave their site despite they wrote useful post that would have others.

It is a pity that not so many people were aware of this but am glad you could help with your post 🙂

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Valentine
It sure is a pity and that is why I wrote this post. I hope that some of these bloggers will read this post and get it fixed.

  7. i have never thought of mentioning myself on twitter. I think it will depend as to whether my tweets would be liked by readers or not. If people find them interesting, they would surely subscribe to my twitter account. So, I guess adding one’s twitter name in that share bar plugin wouldn’t hurt that bad at all.

    1. Hi Mike
If you add your Twitter name you will be able to see who shares your posts via the mention tab in Twitter. If you don’t add your name you will never know. As you can see on some of the comments I got on this post some people will not share your post if you don’t have added your Twitter name even if they like your post…!

      1. I would?! That is a good thing to know, Thomas! Cool Stuff. I’ll note that one.

  8. Farrel

To be honest Thomas, I had a bad experience in Twitter and for this time I really don’t want to be part of it anymore. I’m so glad to know about this one and thank you for sharing. I can also share this one to my friends. This one will help.

  9. NewYork

Isn’t that kinda strange to mention yourself on Twitter? 😀 Never done that.

    1. Actually it is only when people tweet your stuff that you will get mentioned, but you have to configure your plug-in to do this.

  10. I didn’t realize this situation before. I’ve checked my Twitter list and I saw you were right. I guess Twitter name is a pretty important detail.

    1. Hi Marian
I think that it is. It is a lot easier to connect when your twitter name is included when someone tweets your posts.

      1. This is a very good tip for Twitter users. I’m looking forward for your next tips about improving the impact of our tweets or about how to increase the number of followers.

        1. Thank you Jack.
I am still trying to figure out how to increase the number of followers myself 😉

      2. Thanks for replying to my comment. Yes, it is easier because I get notification when it happens, so I don’t have to actually stay on Twitter all day 😀

  11. Thanks for posting this Thomas!
Twitter can be a valuable asset to someone’s website, if you use it correctly. Easy to share and quick. What more do you need for more publisity? Not much.
    Thanks again 🙂

  12. Thomas…I didn’t know what blinded me all these days..I just realized that I was using the wrong Twitter handle after reading your post. It looks like you wrote this one for me(lol)Thanks for the eye opener.:)

    1. Hi Adeline
I am glad that I could help. I just tested your tweet button and it is working just fine now 🙂

  13. Sara

It’s a really good idea to use social networking like Twitter to spread word about your site. So many people visit those sites each day, you are guaranteed to get visits when using those sites in no time!
Thanks for posting these helpful guidelines for twitter 🙂

    1. Indeed. It is scary how many people visit twitter everyday but still it is not guaranteed. You have to try it and work on it 🙂

  14. Asma Khan

    Nice topic Thomas
    I do agree with you.

    1. Thank you Asma. Come back soon 🙂

  15. Lisa

For me, it is rare for someone to tweet my post. If it happens, I hope to make it look as convenient and attractive as possible. Adding a name in a tweet sounds very attractive. Thank you for the detailed procedure to set this up.

    1. You are welcome Lisa.

  16. Hi Thomas,
I really like your point and I am also doing the same mistake but now I am going to add my Twitter name to the Sharebar plugin and will definitely increase my peoples connection.Thankyou!

    1. Hi Pete
I am glad you find my post helpful and I am sure that you will see the benefit from this little setting in the future.

Conservative Chris Loesch, music producer and husband of radio host and CNN contributor Dana Loesch, had his Twitter account suspended on Sunday. He was apparently targeted by leftist users who utilized the “Block & Report Spam” function to trigger the social media account’s automatic spam algorithm. He was notified of his suspension via an email from Twitter claiming it was due to multiple unsolicited mentions to other users. “You will need to change your behavior to continue using Twitter,” the email admonished.

    1. Hi Josephine
I have also heard of people getting their accounts suspended. As long as you don’t spam people or configure to aggressive auto tweet I think you will be fine.

    2. I have to agree with Thomas there. If you are not spamming or doing anything illegal, it is very hard to get suspended by such a big company. Most of the times they know what they are doing.

  18. Mega

    Hi Thomas
I agree with you and I’ll change this little setting.
    Thanks

Hey, Thomas. Long time no see. Just stopping by to say hi! Sorry, I haven’t stopped by for a while. Hope you’ve been doing okay.

Thank you so much for the useful post. I must admit (sadly and unfortunately) that I haven’t had a lot of time in the past few months to participate online as I would like. I can definitely see how adding your Twitter name makes a big difference. I’ll have this info handy when I delve back into things.

    Great info!! It’s much appreciated.

    See you soon.

    1. Hi Allyson 🙂
Good to see you back and yes, adding your Twitter name to these plug-ins does make a big difference.

  21. DeniseGabbard

Great post– and I am ashamed to say I am guilty. But now I have to figure out how to add my Twitter name to the share this buttons on my WP blog…Any ideas

    1. Hi Denise
What plugin are you using for your share buttons? There should be a setting somewhere to put in your twitter name.

  22. DeniseGabbard

I am sure there is–we are traveling this afternoon, I think that will be my project on the long car ride. I use the “share this” plugin.

  23. DeniseGabbard

Thanks! That will make the job a lot easier:)

  24. I am glad to found such useful post. I am also doing the same mistake but now I am going to add my Twitter name to the plugin and will definitely increase my peoples connection.

I am using twitter from three years and following almost fifty peoples but my followers are near about hundred. I always share with my followers some very interesting and amazing information.

  26. I agree with you completely. It’s simple, a difference between good and let’s say, less good blogger is that good one pay attention to small, but important things.

Hey Thomas, totally missed this one before, but wanted to say I so agree with this. I can understand where people don’t know they can change the settings in some of those plugins or just forget but I hate when people do it on purpose because they are “too important to bother with thanking people”.

    1. Hi Brankica
As long as you made it 🙂
It is amazing have many people are leaving out this must have option on plugins. I always want to know who shares my stuff.

  33. I agree with you. I really appreciated your post and looking forward to see new informative posts from you.
