Why you should create a globally recognized Gravatar

If you don’t already have a Gravatar  you should create on right away.!

What is a Gravatar

A gravatar is a profile picture or at least a graphical representation also called an avatar, that follow you around, when you are leaving blog comments on others blog. If you don’t have a gravatar you will see one of these gray no name figures next to your blog comments. When I leave a comment on a blog somewhere, I always get my own little picture next to the comment. That makes it easier and more interesting for others, to read my comments. It also gives me a much bigger change not to get my comment marked as spam. Most spammers does not have a gravatar 😉 Personally, I prefer my visitors to have a gravatar when leaving a comment here on this blog. It makes it a lot more interesting to read and it is a lot easier for me to remember loyal readers when they come back later. There is a lot bigger chance for you to get your comment approved on this blog, if there is a picture of you next to your comment.

Why you need a gravatar when you blog

I know it can be a bit scary to put a picture of yourself on the internet next to a personally comment on someone’s blog, but you really should do it anyway. If you don’t feel like putting a picture of yourself out there, at least make some other picture, maybe a cartoon figure or something like that to make yourself stand out from all the no names and spammers out there, just fishing for a fast backlink to their own blog.

How does a Gravatar works?

Here is a little video to make it all crystal clear how it all works and how easy and fast it is to create:

How to create your own

All you have to do is to go to the website: Gravatar.com and sign up with the e-mail you want to use and upload the picture you want. When that is done, all you need to do, is to enter the e-mail assigned to your new Gravatar, when you leave comments on others blog. The e-mail is the key to your avatar and the blog will automatic check to see if a picture is associated with the e-mail. Don’t worry, your e-mail will not be shown each time you leave a comment, it is also the owner of the blog that is able to see that information. By the way, gravatar.com is owned by WordPress.com.

  1. Having a global gravatar is very important. To be honest, I don’t really like bloggers who doesn’t have a gravatar. Spammers who leave spam comments don’t generally use avatars. Having an avatar shows that you are a real person.

    1. Exactly Brian. Users on my blog with an global gravatar has a lot better change of getting their comment approved. The other important thing is the e-mail address. Don’t use something like bob_money12345@yahoo.com it is just not serious.

  2. Hi Thomas, Great points. Your gravatar is your opportunity to show your face to the world. But so many people either don’t take the time to create a gravatar or use a logo or cartoon instead of their face. Seeming human on the Internet is a struggle. Using a gravatar is a very easy way to overcome that challenge.

    1. Hi Carolyn
It is a shame that more people don’t create a gravatar. It really makes a big difference when leaving comments on others blogs.

  3. I think that many people shy away from placing a face to a name because they want to remain anonymous (per say), however I would more quickly approve a comment that has a human face than a cartoon or the blank space.

    1. Hi Jesse
I think you got a good point there. People are not to keen to put there name and face out there, but it does for sure make a big change in order to get a comment approved.

    Hi Thomas,

    Glad to be here. 🙂
Gravatar is important. Most bloggers will not approve comments that do not have a Gravatar. They want to build a good relationship with everyone who commented on their blogs and without Gravatar, it’s just like you do not have a clear identity.

I have my own Gravatar. I was reminded by my friend some time ago. And I’m glad I did.

    Thanks for sharing, Thomas.
Enjoy your week and see you around!

    Regards,
    Nanda

    1. Hi Karen
It does for sure looks better. I think there is two major reasons why people don’t have a gravatar. The first reason is that they don’t know how to get one, the second is that they don’t like to put there own image out there on the big scary Internet.

Bloggers must have their Gravatar well as readers and fellow bloggers can identify them among the herd..

If you use a fresh and attractive Gravatar then you surely have a cool engagement on the internet with readers and fellow bloggers …

Have you ever seen Harleena Singh or Adrienne smith but all assume that they have a dynamic and charming personalty why ? See their Gravatar and you get the answer ….

    1. Hi Sharad
Yep, I know both Harleena Singh and Adrienne Smith and they are both great samples of how much a good Gravatar can do for a blogger.

    2. Why thank you Sharad for the mention here and I’m glad that my smiling face puts off that air of charming personality! Very flattered.

There are some great points here. I have only just created mine today due to this blog actually! I guess it’s a good way to prove that you’re a real person- like others have said! It’s made me glad I made one now!

  16. I also have a Gravtar associated with my email ID. Thanks for the really informative article.

  17. Gravatars a great and lots of people don’t put their face, they use it for branding. I really don’t like the anonymous thing, I sometimes spend some time on reddit and all the people hiding behind their username bugs me. I liked Google’s rule when G+ first came out that you had to use your real name.
