What is Active Directory Operations Master Roles?

In this post I will tell you about the Operations Master Roles in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). If you are a System Administrator working with Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) it is important that you understand the 5 Operation Master Roles in Active Directory. When you work with multiple domain controllers or maybe even a multidomain Active Directory installation it is important that you know how the 5 master roles in AD works. The 5 roles can be put into 2 categories: Forestwide, and Domainwide. The forest-wide roles only exist once in the entire AD forest, but the Domain-wide roles as the name says only valid for each domain in the Active Directory database.

Active Directory – Protect an OU from accidental deletion

In this post I will tell you how to protect an Active Directory OU from accidental deletion. It is very easy and simple and I think it is a very good thing to do on all your main OU. You have to ask yourself how often do you delete an OU from you active directory that you have not just created. Alomost never right? So why not protect it from accidental deletion? If you want to delete it some day all you have to do is to clear the check box “Protect object from accidental deletion” (see the picture below) on the object you want to delete. This is not rocket science, but simply a little tip you can use if you want to.

How to create multiple users in Active Directory

Active DirectoryIf you need to create a lot of users in active directory, and you don’t want to do it all manually. Microsoft has a nice little tool called CSVDE.EXE that can help you with that. With this command-line tool you can import users from a CSV file. It makes the task a lot simpler if you need to create a bounce of users. Below you can see a little video that shows how it’s done.

csvde.exe has been around in the Windows server platform since Windows server 2000.
